Angus Rutherford

Angus Anselm Walter Rutherford studied at Harrow Art School in London graduating 1992.

A good day for me will begin with a walk to some spot a little away from the footpath where I can sit all day, often upon a hill top and with my mark-making sticks or bendy steel nibs I can open an enquiry into the complex wonders of the scene before me. First, swish in some quick lines of colour or tone, just opening up and feeling the air and the scene from close-to, to far out, to high up, and then dip into one of too many pots of ink and observe as damn hard as you can. I want to keep moving pretty fast but then a tension comes as I slow down to comprehend how one piece of the jigsaw fits with another. I’m seeking these days to relinquish control to tools that are crude, and I convince myself I’m reaching deeper nature by permitting quantum uncertainties, but I always feel that whatever tool held or how clumsy my hand as long as that eye and mind is engaged ninety percent on the scene, the marks made will have an integrity and honesty.’
