Graham Sutherland 1903 - 1980
Born in 1903 in Streatham, Graham Sutherland attended Epsom School before studying art at Goldsmith's School of Art from 1921 to 1926, where he became an accomplished etcher. His role as an official War Artist had him portray the bomb damage in London, but his fame escalated post-war. In 1960, he received the Order of Merit and passed away in London in 1980.
Sutherland's work often focused on natural growth forms like tree roots and thorn bushes, depicted in close-up or from foreshortened perspectives. These organic formations, central to his art throughout his career, sometimes took on a menacing or threatening aspect, with subtle suggestions of human or animal characteristics.
